Have you burned way more than normal this year?

Before the heating season started I had my coal bin as full as I could get it. I figured that I had pretty close to seven tons going into winter. I usually burn about half of that. Yesterday, I opened up the bin to shovel coal over to the end where my coal door is. I knew that I had been going thru more than normal, but was shocked to see how much was gone. I've already burned almost as much as I normally do for an entire heating season!

How about you all.... are you going thru that much more than normal?

Absolutely. I've had many 75 to 95+ pound days. Put it this way, last year in total there was 16 days where I tended the furnace twice in one day. I've already beat that this year.

I also heard on Buffalo NY local news station that the first half of this winter is the coldest on record in the last 22 years. So I guess that explains the coal usage lol.

I got 4 ton in for the season and still have more than 2 ton left . I dont think ill go through all that if the weather stays like this 20s at night 40 during the day. So if i go over 3 ton (usage last year) It wont be by much. That said this december(2017) was a full 10 Degree Avg colder than last year(2016) according to my electric bill chart . Im sure im covered for the season. Im south of you guys and its been as much as 10 to 20 degrees warmer here at times then in NY state.

We've had 16.7% more HDD's to date here this season vs. last season. So, if I had not been doing some wood burning in our living-room stove, I should have burned 16.7% more coal in the boiler this season, but I've burned about the same amount to date as for last year due to burning wood in addition to coal.

Coal is like beer. When your out, go get more and try not to keep track of how much.

Binghamton this year is within 1% of long term average HDD's, but a fair amount higher than the past 2 (warm) winters.

My antique is more efficient than my box stove that I was using for the last 5 yrs and the Vigilant in the basement sips coal...given the cold we've had I think I'm even, but as stated before, don't care, don't count, don't cold!

Been through 1 3/4 ton since mid-Sept. I'll stay within my normal 3 ton nut in the old HITZER--BLASCHAK nut--house at a comfy constant 72-3. 1800 sq. Remember, this is just a crummy old box stove-LOL---no DHW

I have burned about 20% more than this time last year, but it is inline with other cold winters we have had.

Yup, been going through more.

Usually a full coal bucket (35 lbs) lasts for 24 hours and the ash pan also needs to be emptied every 24 hours. So I do all the fill and empty at night. With it colder, I'm having to refill the bucket and empty the pan about every 18-20 hours. So each day the fill/empty time gets moved up.

Since I started with a partially filled 12 ton capacity bin, it's tough to say how much more is being used in total. Based on how much to fill the buckets in 24 hours, I'm guessing about 15% more.

I'm jealous, Fred is the only guy that burns 40 pounds a day whether it's ten below zero or 55 outside and his old drafty farm house is always 72 and a half degrees. He has obviously modified his stove and refuses to share

I think his scale is maxed at 40 pounds and his thermometer is painted to read 72..
