Thanks for the explanation. It's nice to see some real world comparisons, let's stir the pot and put that information on the wood forum hahaha.

All in good fun of course lol

The one thing I wish I had done differently is that I should have shut off the boilers bedroom zone T-Stat to see how cold the bedrooms would have all gotten on only the wood stove in the living room for heat. As it stands, the bedroom zone was maintained at 70 degrees throughout my 13 day wood burning experiment via the coal boiler.

A lot depends on if your paying for the fuel for a wood stove. I burn wood exclusively in houses i rehab. All the fuel comes out of the house and i have to get rid of it somehow. So the work with a woodstove in some cases seems like a good trade off.

At hardware store yesterday and seen pressed wood blocks for $4.99 in a 12 pack wrapper.
Is this the going price?

It all depends upon the weight. I pay $165 per ton (before tax, my pick-up). Mine come in a 6 pack, with each block weighing 3.5 lbs. That's 21 lbs. of wood in each pack. 96 x 6-packs per pallet. 1 ton per pallet. Or about $1.72 per pack.

How does that compare to the cost of firewood in your area?

I haven't priced firewood in many years. I have calculated that 1.4 tons of the compressed sawdust blocks should be the honest BTU equivalent of a typical full cord of well seasoned, cut and split, mixed hardwoods though.

$165 x 1.4 = $231

So my benchmark to beat is $230 for a "full" cord of well seasoned mixed hardwoods, cut and split. If it costs more than $230 for firewood I'm better off getting the sawdust blocks.

Those looking for free wood try your local recycling center. Our,s has big pile residents bring out all year and if no one takes it they doze it over the bank. I dont need it as there is wood everywhere ,i get plenty just doing remodeling and rehabbing.

I don't think so. When you purchase something from out of State there is no State tax on it.

Unless the company has a corporate presence in Ohio, in which case tax is due even if purchased from out of state.
