Guys here is a Lehigh coal co . from the 1940s.This vein will run minimal 50 feet thick to at places close to 200 feet thick .It will roll over and also split on itself . jack

Thjack lantern the fireboss is using is Not For Light but is being used to test for explosive gas .jackThe mine is no. 8 mine owned by Lehigh Navigation Company 1940

Years ago I talked to my pops buddy he said they would hand drill a big area like this .A air powered drill Might Collapse The Roof on him an my dad .Vibration Was The Miners Enemy .jack

Not a job I'd want. Checking for explosive gas with a flame seems like it would have the potential of turning a mine into a minefield !! :o

Guys do not Think The Lamp Is a Lantern .This is a Safety Lamp used as a gas check instrument .Google Davy Lamp . jack

Kind of tedious at times but this explains how the lamp works. Some interesting stuff, no shortages of geniuses back then. :D

I never knew that such technology existed back then. Thanks for posting the youtube link! I thought they were still using canaries into the 40's.

Thanks Paul.

Sure there are lots of corners in the mines..... But a good miner does his best to keep the coal as clean as possible. :D

The little spittoon happens to be a ladies travel cuspidor ...... The mens regulation size wouldn't fit on the shelf :D
