I am starting to see a stone , or a coal byproduct called aztec sunrise in my Wernersville pa area. It certainly resembles gasified remnants of anthracite nut size coal. Yet i don't think what I'm stating is accurate. The vendor states its a coal byproduct . ITs like clinker without the metallized look, Does anyone have more information on this and how this landscaping material is produced?

It was a popular landscaping rock here in the late 70's and is nothing more than screened Red Ash bank.
.
Red Ash is what remains of a Culm bank that caught fire. :D

A culm bank is the waste material rejected from an Anthracite Coal preperation plant and consists of rock, shale, bony, and rejected coal.

I screened and shipped over 20,000 tons for a landscape stone broker in 1987 and never had a call for it again .. :D

Like this? These are clinkers, right?

If clinkers were worth anything we'd all be rich.

Looks like what used to be referred to as RedDog around here, used a lot for driveways & some landscaping years back. From what I've seen it was old unusable coal scrap that they would pile , set on fire & then cover somewhat with dirt. After some amount of time it would bake & burn itself out then they would dig it out, allow it to cool (if still hot) & then either screen it for size or simply sell in bulk.

I've heard that such stones used to be used for landscaping, but they went out of fashion a long time ago. Landscape designers find this stone impractical and unattractive, so they very rarely use it in their projects.
