A concern was brought to my attention by my father. He informed me that heating oil in the tank will eventually go bad if unused.

Is this true and if it is, what is the shelf life?

if the fuel is dry, that is no water in the bottom of the tank,, and it is kept fairly cool, it will last quite a few years.. the microbes that grow in heating oil, diesel and jet fuel grow in the layer where the oil meets water, they make a slimy film that clogs filters, and makes a mess.. The microbes grow faster and better in warm climates.. hence my comment about temperature..

In the aviation world there is a product called biobore ?? I think that is right,, and it kills the microbes.. Check with your oil supplier and see what he says,,

Not a problem here, I keep just enough oil in the tank so the water heater can fire under high demand. It's due to run out any day now, I'm saving up to buy another 10 gallons! I'm sure it's fairly cool as well, since it's an in-ground tank. I probably could do just as well with a 55 gallon drum in the cellar.
