I just saw a thing on CNN 05/15/08 , our wonderful government is looking to process coal into jet fuel.
And if that goes well they will start making gasoline out of coal.
just what we need the coal heating will go the way of the corn heating.

They'd be using bituminous. No worries for anthracite.

Well it's been mentioned before. Anthracite is already at a premium price, it's nearly double that of bit. now. Secondly bit. coal is such an abundant resource in this country that the supply side can easily be met so even if they ramped up fast on project like that there will be plenty of coal of to meet the demands. The price will go up but I really don't think you'll see drastic increases especially for the anthracite. I'd be more worried about the worldwide demand for it driving up prices.

The gist of it is if coal is not cheaper than a fuel like gas or oil where you can just turn a switch to get your heat no one is going to buy it. It will always be cheaper.

I think the biggest factor in price increase is the price of fuel to get the coal delivered. Anywhere outside of the coal region really feels it, when diesel goes up to $10 a gallon that costs will be added to the price for all of us in the surrounding states, it doesn't get here without burning fuel. Like Richard says though, nobody will buy it if it ever gets close in price to a "hands off" fuel.
