Freddy is probably closer. It's about 1.7 tons of pellets to meet ton of anthracite if I remember correctly.

16.5 million BTU's per ton for pellets
24 million+ BTU's per ton of coal.

Note I'm using a lower average of 24 million.

Wood boilers are all over the place up here,and it seems like more every day.Wood stoves seem to have been replaced with outside boilers.I live right in the middle of a small town(50' lots and smaller)In the winter you can smell wood burning and sometimes the oil from poorly adjusted oil burners but I have never smelled anything from coal.when I put in my coal furnace the only way my neighbors new about it was when they saw me bringing bags of coal in the celler.There are 3 of us within 300' burning coal and like I said no smells.So I think that guy was looking out for#1.

If they outlaw coal in NY then just ask the inspector to look at the chimney; no smoke no coal. See ya. :D
