HELP BEFORE COLD NIGHT!! Stove Is Stuck on and House Hot!!

Illtry backing off the coal and try the 60-65 thing for now. Thermostat is in same room s stove and seems to be working. Could the thing just go apesht and need it to be told less coal out of the blue like this? Now not to long ago before I went up for the night the damn thing looked almost burnt out so I turned it up to 76 so it stoked it and made it brighter orange.
