WOW....... I guess if I had to pick one word to describe my first " Meet and Greet " that's it.

When I first mentioned to and invited my wife Carol, I'm sure she agreed to tag along just to humor me. In the aproaching weeks I stayed in contact with Steve ( KingCoal) and Scott (Scottscoald) as we planned to meet up on the way down. Steve and his lovely wife Lorna drove in from Indiana, arrived at our house Friday afternoon and within minutes, driving down from New York, in rolled Scott.

I would guess it took every bit of five minutes , before I would place a very substantial wager that........... A total stranger would bet that we were all either related or lifetime friends.

Scott, stayed for an hour or so, and headed to Hazleton meeting up with Hamden Bob & Miss Julie for a few rounds of adult beverages.

After a good night's rest, we cranked out of the crib early and headed down to join the Tamaqua Breakfast Club.

Meeting everyone in person was awesome, and the tours were a real treat. A special thanks goes out to Jack and Richard for making this entire event possible, and our fellow members who made it so enjoyable.

We stopped in Jim Thorpe for a few hours on the way home, and Carol was already suggesting some coal related attractions, in the area such as Eckley Village, one of the 9 Co-Generation plants, or possibly a coal preperation plant tour for next year. She really enjoyed the day and was genuinely interested in the tours, but I think it's a bit too early to get her interested in taking over running the sandblaster.

The seam of coal runs along that rock face, it's not flat but at an angle and I believe it was about 20 foot thick. The hole is from an old underground mine. If you look you can see a line extending to the left from the hole. That line was where they laid track in the underground mine on top of the seam mining out the coal above it but only perhaps a 10 foot high tunnel. There was one section you actually see the square cutouts for the ties along the line

That line extends to the left up to where they were backfiling. You can see 2 lines in this picture, one in the upper right corner and the other one is obvious. They would have multiple tunnels all up and down that rock face.

And that is the coal being removed now that you see below at the base. This shot shows a second line below the first line in upper right corner...them ole boys were some kinda busy underground back in the day...more coal now to take out of pile below presently. 100 year old timbers

What's a "Mule Way?

Was the tunnel in the face from the other side of the mountain or from the Lansford side ? Is there another seam behind the
face that we were looking at ? Did they reach the bottom of the seam that we saw them working on ? Questions,questions !

We were told that the mines in that area(Lansford) all eventually achieved an interconnection at some point in the history of operations. As We spread out at the site,some Folks may have been out of earshot of the stories being told. I remember Jack saying something about the surviving head frame from #10 mine as we drove back from the processing area visit. There may have also been a #11mine... I can't remember ! I don't recall another Coal Seam other than what was being completely dug out in that existing pit. I have to believe that given the expense and effort to open and expose,based on Coal Quality,that they scarfed all Coal from the bottom of the seam....

There is a brewery right here in Berwick.

I can arrange a tour for SBC Brewing Co in Pittston, Pa or Lion Brewery in Wilkes Barre Pa. Both are within 15 to 20 minutes from the
Scranton Pa Mcdade Park mine tour.

I may also be able to talk Susquehanna Coal Company into a coal preperation plant tour. Their breaker is located about 300 yards from Susquehanna Brewing Company (SBC)

Uh Oh!!!!!! Sounds like another coal mine tour is brewing. Or is it "another coaled brew tour is mine".

Ok this all sounds good, maybe I can stay and enjoy the company next time I'm up for it as long as the time permits. I really enjoyed myself plus I liked the rider( McGiever ) he mad the trip seem like it was only 2 hrs .

I definitely be up to hanging out with the members of this here forum and doing some serious bs'ing! I will help out the best I can if need be!!

Hi Ken, I had 5,000# this year but I 5.400# last( springs are getting weak ) I burned around 3 tons or so last but I have a Glenwood # 8 for this year so I don't have a clue for this coming year( I'm back to being a newbie this year ) we missed you this year at the m&g, hope we can meet again .
