Recently I've been reading about down draft coal burning. Does anyone here have or ever used one of these? I don't think there are any in production currently.

There are old coal cook stoves and boilers too. I was curious about the pros and cons with a down draft fire.

Primary air is fed in thru the top and the outlet is in the ash area. The fire burns upside down.

pretty slick, I wonder if the efficiency goes up drastically like it does with the owb.

Ain't no way to burn coal with the draft going from top to bottom !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IF you could, how would you put new coal in the bottom ? under fed stoker pot feeds coal from the bottom ,but also feeds air from the bottom, burns on the top .

Search 'riteway 37' which is the same thing, you'll get lots of hits, and be sure to search that 'riteburn' stove on here also.

I had a riteway 37 a long time ago, it worked fine. It just didn't put out enough BTU's for my house.

EDIT: The Hitzer 82 furnaces are downdrafters also. They come highly recommended and rated on this site.

I could see it working, but would be very hard on any grate with heat and gasses being drawn down through them instead of being drawn away. A lot of fly ash would also be drawn into the flue when shaking down.

The Riteway is not down draft but has the flue exit down low.

that DS Riteburn IS a knock off of the Riteway #37 but it is NOT a true down drafter.

Downdraft stoves draw down thru the grates, that stove drafts UP thru the grates and pulls the gasses back down from the top of the combustion chamber and closer to the fire bed before exiting.

the DS Riteburn is also in NO WAY a base burner and anyone saying so should be ashamed of themselves and shunned.

sorry to say but, more tripe and hype.

Here's the book I found about the downdraft boiler. Neat stuff.
