The other day I found a pile of unburnt coal dumped on a back corner of my property. Likely a previous owner, as the house was heated with coal back in the 70s. It's in a pretty remote part of my land where people have been dumping yard waste, branches, etc of years, so it doesn't bother me there, but I was wondering if it poses an environmental threat to my well water or crops? Should I dispose of it or can I just let it lay? Is it safe to use in lieu of gravel or is it not the kind of thing that dogs and kids shouldn't be playing on? It's only a few wheel barrow's worth so not imagining that there's any point trying to find a buyer. Sorry for the ignorant questions...no experience with coal and the Internet wasn't very helpful.
Thanks for your advice.

Welcome to the forum Chad I would confidently say that it poses no threat and you can leave it lay. I agree its not enough to sell or worry about. I've even heard of some people using it for landscaping. Many people put the ashes on their driveways also.

It is a sign from Heaven that you need a coal appliance!

What may look like a few wheelbarrows of coal, may be more than you think when you are not accustomed of seeing piles of coal. It certainly won't do anything sitting there, but you might want to use it to augment your heat next winter... (ya always have to give it a try...)

I once bought what appeared to be 1 1/2-2 tons of nut coal which turned out to be about 8 1/2. It can be very decieving just laying there.dlj wrote:What may look like a few wheelbarrows of coal, may be more than you think when you are not accustomed of seeing piles of coal.

Its non-hazardous waste if the OP wishes to just dispose of it. No point in just letting it sit and do nothing.
