And all of those people thought they were celebrating St. Patrick's Day on 3/17, when they were really celebrating the first day of spring. A two for one special.

Which most people didn't notice, because it was St. Paddys day, and the suds were overshadowing any daylight.lsayre wrote:Many people foolishly believe that spring starts today, but spring comes when there are finally 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness, and that happened on Monday 3/17.

How would you explain that the Mosquito is the state bird of Alaska with all their cold

Tell me about it. Spring hasn't come here either, it was pretty warm Saturday but now they are saying 2-4" of snow for tomorrow night into Wednesday. What the hell? This winter needs to go away.

I wouldn't count on that either. I'd heard that cold kills the ticks, but it sure didn't kill off the one I got.Flyer5 wrote:

Two years ago, I was coming back down a wooded northern slope from a morning of squirrel hunting in the east Adirondacks. It was the end of December, it had warmed up to 20 degrees out, and a there was a foot of snow. When I got in my car, I felt something moving on my left temple. I reached up and picked off a deer tick, and it was VERY much alive. Fortunately I got it before it got me !!!!!
Now, I'll never trust the advice that ticks aren't active in the cold.

I've said it B4, and I'll say it again. "THIS" Sun. (for sure), I'm gunna let my stove go out. (this is my 3rd or 4th weekend of saying this). Today I'm going to my local Agway, for 5 more bags of Kimmel, (to get through the weekend), and "that's it".
My oil tank is down to almost a 1/4, and I'm trying to extend the coal for when the oil prices drop. They just did about 20 cents a gal. last week. Maybe they'll do it again. I think the going rate this week is about $3. 70.

If I could get longer burn times, like you guys do, I would run it till may. But tending to it,(as often as I must), takes some of the fun out of it. This is my "stove" schedule.
1- 6 am. R+R (rake and riddle, cause it's almost dead), M/T ash pan, and refill hopper.
2- Noon. Wife comes home, R+R (cause it's almost dead) and top off hopper.
3- 3 pm. Wife is done with work, and will riddle, only cause she wants to.
4- 4 pm. I come home, and check the stove, just cause I want to. (sometimes will adjust).
5- 6 or 7pm- light R+R, to keep it hot. (possibly repeat at 9 or 10)
6- 11-11:30 pm, (bed time) R+R, M/t ash pan, top off hopper.
Looks pretty tedious, doesn't it? It could be altered somewhat, but because we're home in the afternoon most of the time, it doesn't bother us too much to play. But the most negative fact is, if I don't take care of it 1st thing in the morning, by the time the wife comes home at noon, it'll "probably" be dead. Don't think she'll go 12 hrs, even on "super" slow. But I've gotten use to it, and compromises must be made to cut the oil bill "almost" in 1/2, and keep the house warmer.

I feel for you joeq, and wish the other heating option was a little more forgiving. It took me 3 yrs (I'm a stuborn ginny) to be in my coal comfort zone.
