Only thing I remember is the price of diesel dropped big time...it was about $1 per gallon.

Why no recovery for anthracite when diesel is now at about $3.90/gal. and #2 heating oil is at about $3.55/gal?

It almost seems to be that as fuel/heating oil prices rise anthracite production declines. Seems to me that just the opposite should be intuitively correct. Perhaps some other reason caused anthracite production to drop like a rock post 1998?

China coal production was around 300 million tons and production and consumption started skyrocketing when they started their push for industrial supremacy over the US in 1980. They were importing a majority of what they used from guess where? Yep USA.

Today they are mining and consuming almost 1,600 million tons of their own coal. When your best customer starts producing their own raw materials instead of buying it from you it makes an impact.

Couple that with US EPA Bullying and Harrassment Tactics and I think you've got your answer.

Things are in place already to move coal in short order.
As is everywhere, it is all about the money...when it becomes more economical to get the US coal, they will get it.

I've been listening to the idea that the Chinese are going to buy anthracite from the US. But I have to ask, why would they do that? It would be an extremely expensive fuel source for them.

They don't use it as fuel. They use it as a substitute for coke.

But they can buy anthracite from Russia, Vietnam and North Korea. Why would they come to the eastern US?
