Not long enough, I shudder at the money I spent on propane before I found that I could heat with coal.

I joined the forum about one week after I started trying to burn coal, locally aquired Bit coal, 50% fines, basicly waste from a coal yard. It didn't burn well at all, so I went searching for an education. That was the fall of '05, So this is my 7th heating season.

This is our first year and love it. Rice coal and almost a 5gal pail in the hopper every day. Is that to much or is that another question?

Depends on how cold it is in your area......how big of a house you have......insulation.....doors.....windows. A lot of factors to figure in.

this is 2nd year burning, both son in laws were burning coal 2 years prior to that, after checking theirs out,I realized it wasn't as dirty or as much work as people think it is. Sorry that we didn't start years earlier! Just think of all that money that we spent on propane!

It would be one full year this month.

3 months burning nut and stove in the Godin and the King, Jan - March.

Since June 1 running the VF, the oil burner is getting cobwebs.

This is my 2nd winter heating with coal. First winter heated with my Surdiac and this year with the Hitzer 983 - wow what a difference! The Surdiac was a great stove to learn on, but the Hitzer sure makes life easier - and warmer. Take care, CW

This is the first winter we've burned coal. Wife and I closed on our first home in August. Alaska Channing III burning rice. Previous owners said they only used "2 1/2-3 ton a year". They were wrong, or they only fired the stove when it got damn cold. I've burned almost two ton, have another 1.4 ton in the shed and will probably get another 10 bags or so before spring. Definitely building a bin so I can buy it bulk next fall.

There is a big difference between "How much coal do you burn in a year?" and "How much coal does it take to keep the house at 73 all winter?" :)

It could be worse...the previous owners of my house said they burned "a couple cords" of wood and 500 gallons of fuel oil in a year. I called the local firewood dealer and found out they were his best customer, 15 full cords of firewood per winter (Plus the fuel oil!!). I'm on track to keep the house toasty all winter for 8 tons.

I don't know how warm we're keeping the house. When it gets cool, we turn the feed up, and turn it down when it gets warm. I'm guessing 70-75. We'll kill the stove altogether when it's forecast to get over 45-50 for the day, then fire it up again before bed. I figure it'll end up around 4 ton. I'll just build a bin to hold 7 and order 5 next year and see how it goes.
