The scary part of this drastic temp drop is that we are only supposed to go down to 12* till morning,we are already at 7* & when the big light in the sky went dark, the wind came out to play.... BIG time. :what:

-11 according to my Suburu, 0 on the porch. :gee: I think the radiant heat coming through the porch windows must be throwing the thermometer off...or possibly the guys that made it in China didn't calibrate it properly.

I got woke up by the wife - she noticed the CO reading 40 on the detector. I could smell it instantly. The long run times made the bed of coal shallow ... and when that happens I either have to restrict combustion air, or take weight off the baro. In this case I removed an old clinker from the baro (used as additional weight), which added .015" to the draft, which was enough to fix the issue.

Glad your wife noticed that Smitty! I know that combustion smell.

The issue in this house is I'm still using the forced hot air system in the main zone, via a heat exchanger and the oil furnace blower. When it gets this cold outside the 2nd floor gets cold. The system runs, gets it very warm, and within a few minutes it's chilly again. I still have that pile of radiators out in the barn waiting to be installed, separate zones for the 1st and 2nd floors.

Yeh these single digits are really hittin the coal bin hard. I’m up to 100 lbs a day. My estimate to buy coal at the end of February has been moved up to next week.
