Long-term effects have to be looked at, for sure, but think about what might have happened if oil and coal were just now being discovered....

I mean, that's what Al just got the "undeserved" prize for, isn't it????

Europe is just full of nuke plants and wind generators. Just try to set either up here.

But we can burn all the carbon we want. That's what needs revisiting, and that's why Al got the prize.

I am not a big al fan but he is the first person to get global warming looked at hard. I do believe it is happening there is to much evidence to deny it. I also believe humans have contributed to it. CO2 does act as a blanket keeping heat in and the thicker the blanket the warmer you are. The planet was warmer when all of the vegetation and animals were buried and formed coal and oil. This was carbon sequestering of sorts which leads to less co2 in the air. As we burn it we put it back into the air, increasing the co2 blanket. There are other factors that make this process snowball such as the polar ice caps melting. They used to reflect energy back away from the earth but as they get smaller the energy is absorbed by the planet instead. It is my understanding that co2 traps energy by reflecting infrared energy back towards the earth. I can research it if anyone wants to know for sure. I also saw someone mentioned that leaves falling and rotting put co2 in the air, this is true but when new ones are formed in the spring the same amount of carbon is used to build new ones as was released the prior year. So they do not contribute to increased co2 concentrations in the atmosphere. It is the same thing burning wood, all of the carbon that is released would have been released wether it rots or is burned. So burning wood does not increase co2 content in the atmosphere as long as there is atree to replace the one that is burned. Basically what I have been explaining is the law of conservation of energy. Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it mearly changes form. One other point that I should mention is that by cleaning up the particulates in the air, such as from diesels and coal fire power plants. We have reduced the energy reflected back into space by the particulates which has enhanced global warming.
All in all I believe it is a very complicated subject that we will never have an honest answer to until the politicians and buisnesses stop stifling honest research. Both will twist the statisics to say whatever benifits them. I will keep burning coal untill someone gives me a better option.

I enjoyed watching the weather channel for many years. My job requires me to work outside in it. With all of the experts in weather and all the technology available, they still cannot predict the weather one week in advance. Hurricane Noel that just went up the coast is a prime example. There were six or seven diffrent models of it's expected track. all of them were wrong. The storm did what it wanted. Is the earth getting warmer? yes However global warming is a political issue not an environmental issue. Let's pretend the earth is like a lifeboat in the middle of the ocean. one day some of us have an idea of poking holes th the bottom of the boat. Then everyone joins in. All of a sudden we figure out the boat is sinking and we will all die if we don't stop. However only the U.S. has to stop poking holes in the boat and must start repairing the damage at great expence to our economy. China and India as well as some other people are allowed to continue poking as many holes in the boat as they want. If global warming is truly real EVERYONE would stop. Not just us! This is called socialism and I do not subscribe to it. Global warming is nothing more than a way of controling people. Al Gore flies around in a private jet while preaching that we should ride bikes. When I see him an a SEPTA train or a greyhound bus, I will look at what he has to say. Rich Hohenshilt

Everybody knows GW directs the storms and controls the weather, the sooner he's out of office the sooner our planet will return to normal. :)

Funny how Northern England was prime wine country in the 1600's, shhhhh, don't tell anyone though, they had massive carbon foot prints back in the day.

Actually, most of the lead pollution on this planet was caused by the ancient Chinese, Romans, Greeks and others back to the bronze age. Their furnaces were so inefficient that about 90% of the earth's present lead pollution is from them and not from the industrial reveloution. Just goes to show you how important efficient furnaces are. :)

Lots of information here, long read, but I thought I'd share it.

Once again, George Carlin's irreverence helps us pause to think....

It's debateable wether or not Gore deserves the Nobel - the prize was actually awarded to the IPCC. The Nobel Prize committee cited the IPCC for 20 years of scientific reports that focus attention on the relationship between human activities and global warming. The lead author of the first IPCC report is my next door neighbor, lately everyone asks about him, asks what we spoke about & if someones actually seen the medal. Its an honor to have know him. He collects/restores old cars - talk about HC emissions !

So, inquiring minds want to know: does he bust your balls about burning coal??? :chop:

We'll be causing an International controversy...

This just in, Nobel Prize winner on Global Warming has neighbor who burns coal and drives around in old high emission spewing automobiles....

This information first reported at nepadigital.com ...More at 11....
