I just break up charcoal (2-3 chunks) or cowboy coal, make some good hardwood shavings from my hand plane, shredded newspaper and wrap them with newspaper or put in a small paper bag....seems to work every time. Just bury it in the coal, light, let burn for 10-15 secs, then turn on the combustion blower.

some people cut of a Road Flare into chunks and put one in the bag too!

Youwant to be careful as the magnesium oxide can spontaniously combust. The word on the street is that is what caused alaska's fire.

I'm currently doing the charcoal, newspaper, wood shavings using a small chimney but it takes a while and it produces lots of smoke. Would like a quicker less smoke way to do it.

I guess a little smoke is better than going up in flames.
