I know, I know - it's NPR. I do listen to diverse stuff and occasionally they have some interesting programs that I learn something from. I just heard two that might be of interest here. They're linked below. Once on the linked site, you can read the transcripts or listen to the .mp3 file. Or simply ignore it

I try to avoid the mainstream media, NPR, & the like .... because I can't afford to buy a new TV every time I throw a brick through it.

Thanks for the links. It seems pretty simple to me, if the military wants energy, it will get energy... Why wouldn't we use coal gasification?

IIRC, isn't this the process similar to what Germany had to resort to in WII when we cut them off from their petroleum sources?dlj wrote:Thanks for the links. It seems pretty simple to me, if the military wants energy, it will get energy... Why wouldn't we use coal gasification?

I believe so, but there has been a lot of research in that area since then. We can do it now a whole lot better.VigIIPeaBurner wrote: IIRC, isn't this the process similar to what Germany had to resort to in WII when we cut them off from their petroleum sources?

Newest heard today from newsworks.org ...
Pennsylvania’s coal industry faces uncertain future

- “I just tell them, give it a few years and see what your electric bill does,” he laughs. “Go a little bit of time without coal and see what your electric bill does.".
- Listen to it... if you can. Corbett doesn't buy the GW stuff.

Oil from coal was proven viable (yet completely uneconomical) by the Germans in WWII, and much of their war machine was fueled by it. Sasol, the South African chemical giant, has been making oil from coal for many decades on a large scale. The problem is that the Fisher-Tropsch process of WWII fame has not been improved upon much at all, and it is still totally uneconomical. If Sasol did not have many other chemical success stories, and if it was not being subsidized heavily for its Fisher-Tropsch process of turning coal to oil, it would have gone bankrupt long ago.
Of course, there will come a time when natural oil will be so expensive that making it from coal (or wood, or natural gas, biomass, etc...) will become economical.

AFAIK Larry they can make it for about the equivalent of $50 to $60 a barrel oil. The trouble is the volatile oil market and other issues like they use a lot of water. It's a risky investment, if you have situation like you did in 2008 that is going to bankrupt you overnight.

Production waste by-product is lots of CO2...and that's not looked at too kindly.

I wonder , is there a way to find out which companies misuse their employees so that we as responsible rock burners could avoid doing business those companies. I sorta feel that we owe it to those guys to only buy from safety conscious companies. If anyone has any kind of a list please post it.....
