Anyone know much about how these work? Are they worth the money or is it a waste? I just can't seem to get myself to believe they work like they claim to.

We discussed this about 2 months ago. They're not worth buying. See the link below.

Are Infrared Heaters a Scam?

Like he said, been discussed...

Any 1500w space heater will do the same thing, and it may save on your gas bill, but your electric bill will go up.
Yes, it will heat your area you are in, but other rooms will get cold, especially if your thermostat is that room.
Go to Walmart or any big box store and get a $30-50 heater, it will do the same thing and cost you much less.

I tried to convince a guy in work that these edenpure things were 1500 watts in and at 21 cents a kwh in CT last year I told him he'd be doing around 30 cents a hour full bore or maybe 16-17 cents a hour on a thermostat. No magic.

He did not believe me, he thought these things were f' magic or something. something like $ 300-400. But they do have nice Amish handcrafting (which is cool if it really is true)

He buys two.

Next month he comes in and complains his electric bill is 650 bucks, there is something wrong, so I run thru some assumptions and find that each one consumes 200 plus bucks a month.

They got the publik fooled big time, I like to play with the saleman at the home shows, he says its the ionic tube that is so efficient, I tell him what tech background do you have to sell these and what is a BTU and the joker can't even tell me that.

Loser with a "L"

Why would anyone think that people that don`t believe in using electricity would know how to make an electric heater that uses very little? What they do know is how to make a buck. They also do very nice high quality work from what I`ve seen but I wouldn`t hire one to do electrical work.

Can't believe this scam is still out there. Tried to convince a friend of mine that there is no such thing as free energy but he bought one just the same. I doubt these things are Amish built. They're too honest to be involved in this sort of thing.

Disclosure: I work with a company that sells infrared heaters similar to Edenpure. However, my opinions are based on my own personal experience.

Whenever infrared heaters are discussed, someone inevitably brings up the physical law which says that all resistive-coil electric heaters produce the same number of BTU's per watt. This is absolutely accurate and indisputable. But it is a leap of logic to equate "producing the same number of BTU's" with "doing exactly the same thing."

Let me explain. Suppose it takes 55 gallons of water to water my lawn. I feed that amount of water into my sprinkler system and the lawn stays green. Then my neighbor, who has the same size lawn but no sprinkler system, takes a 55 gallon drum of water and pours it into a big hole in the middle of his lawn. The immediate vicinity stays green, but the rest of his lawn goes brown. But we both used exactly the same amount of water.

I'm sure you can see where I'm going with this. Anyone who has ever used an inexpensive space heater knows how its heat is "distributed" - a spot right in front of the heater gets barbecued to an uncomfortably hot temperature. Standing elsewhere in the room, you might not even notice the heater was on for an hour. Most anyone who has ever used an infrared heater - which the majority its critics haven't, by their own statements - has found that its heat is evenly distributed throughout the room. This makes all the difference. Even heat distribution means a greater degree of comfort with a lesser amount of run time, which could easily equate to some savings on electricity. I cannot explain how or why this heat distribution works, scientifically. All I can say is that it does, because I have experienced it.

In my opinion, infrared heaters get a bad rap mostly because of the way they are marketed - with terms like "miracle," "breakthrough," and "high efficiency." (Not to mention "Get the heater FREE! plus $250 for the cabinet" ;) ) This gives people the idea that the heaters are somehow "magic" - that just plugging one in will somehow automatically draw down your energy bill. Since this obviously isn't the case, the technology in general gets regularly denounced as a scam.

Our company markets the heaters without hype, as exactly what we believe they are: Fantastic space heaters with a hugely increased safety factor.

Not too bust anyones bubble but I bought an EDENPURE not the amish rig or other ir/quartz heaters. I like it yeah it saves a little on oil bill but raises the electric. Now lets see electric( made here) or more oil, cause we use our own oil right? . Now that I have a bigger house and can use a coal or wood stove guess what im gonna use. Oh yeah those amish ones look at the make of the heater. Usually states made in china or Taiwan. Only amish part is the cabinet. We can fix our own economy without politicians if we bought local <made in usa>

You've come to the wrong place to argue about heat distribution. LOL

You have a fan which heats a greater volume of air which I might add many other of these much cheaper element/ceramic heaters also can be purchased with. That still doesn't justify the $300 price tag since you can buy and elemental/ceramic heater for less that $100.

While on the topic electric is going to be the second most expensive form of heat in most areas whether it's standard base board, cheap electric heater or any other electric heater. Only reason it''s second is because oil is going through the roof.

Ironically, infrared heaters probably work best to save money when you're already using electric heat! If your electric furnace/heat pump can be made to run less by zone heating a usable area with infrared, the savings can add up.

Did I mention our heaters are wholly made in USA? :D

Yup, believe it or not they're made from parts, sheet metal, and wood in a Mennonite factory about 20 miles from where I'm sitting. Please just don't conflate us with the "Amish" heater you may see in national publications - the "two not-so-free heaters" ads I referred to in my last post.

You're preaching to the choir, any product you see discussed here with the exception of a few European models is made in the US. Matter of fact most of them are made in Eastern Pennsylvania to be exact.

Haha - the joke's on me. Should have saved that parable for another forum

I'm not arguing infrared vs. wood, oil, or anything else - only vs. regular space heaters, with which it is often (in my opinion inaccurately) compared. I stand by my experience on this one - there is no comparison.

Beyond heat distribution, I don't think anybody would argue against the increased safety of a completely enclosed infrared heater. It would take some serious ingenuity to start a fire with one, by contrast to standard space heaters, which cause a large percentage of house fires. Tough to put a price tag on that.

Speaking of price tags, our own infrared heaters are 100% made in USA, and still priced at or below the industry average. Can't speak for other brands ;)
