Emergency Back up Power for Coal Stove

Any one have experience running a stoker on back up power? I know Harman sells that battery back up but it seems to be a better alternative would be a small Honda generator with the inverter. I know it would not be wise to plug into a regular generator but the Hondas look interesting. The smaller units run for like 20 hours on less than 5 gal gas.

Do a search on "Battery Backup" Or backup Power, been discussed numerous times. many of us use some type of backup. I doubt you would get a 20 hour backup unless you have a good battery or two. You also have to know you requirements for the stove to size the battery for the amount of time needed.

Some of us them too, my battery backup (about 10-20 mins) is just to get the generator online. it's homelite 3500Watt, not sure how long with would run, haven't had to use it much, just less than an hour or so.

I recall prepping those when they first came out, back in my dealership days. Quiet as a mouse! I've never heard an engine run as quiet as this! Big money, but they last forever.

I just finished a full assault on my Visa by buying this: A Yamaha EF6300iSDE inverter (pure sine wave) generator. Not as quiet as the one above, but it's over double the output.

Very cool! yes the honda is crazy quiet.. my kawasaki 5kw is next then 8k generac and the 20 hp 10 kw is terriblely loud and sucks 10 gal a day...

gas station loves me when power is out...

Big power = big fuel!

It's well worth the trade-off.

Mine is still only 64db at full load. It's got a muffler that looks like it was taken off a compact car!

My dad just got a new generator. He gave me his old one, a Coleman Powermate 4000 with a Honda engine. Anyone know anything about this unit?

That's my project this weekend.

Not that particular unit, but I do know that Honda engine will outlast everything you power with it .... including the gen itself!

That's my project this weekend.

The engine is a good one and the gen is also sad tho that they stopped making some of them and parts are a bit hairy to get. I have one that has a weak circut breaker and had to improvise when replacing it. the cleanleness of the power isnt like the sine wave inverter type but very adequate for house needs like lights and freezer.

64db is quiet! should work real good. sta-bil is our friend with all the gen gas I buy. goes in right at the pump so its always in there.....

Yep, Sta-bil goes into all of my 5-gal cans the minute they are emptied. That way I don't forget to put it in later.

So what's the problem with plugging into a regular generator? I know it's not "clean" power but I didn't think that mattered for motors. I thought it was just electronics that didn't like dirty power.
