For those of us burning coal for the first year, I will not be upset if you go into DETAILS, DETAILS, and more DETAILS, on shutting down for the season. Thanks :D

I found this homemade device really helpful. Tack welded a brush to the end of a 25' plumber's snake. This allows me to run it through any of the vent passages very easily. Follow up with a vacuum and you've got clean vents.

What about neutralizing and cleaning the interior of a furnace/stove at the end of the season?

LPS makes a great product that leaves a rust preventing film on ferrous surfaces, works great on the inside of the stove and burns off the next time you light the stove. I get mine from MSC Industrial supply: http://www1.mscdirect.com/CGI/NNSRIT?PMPXNO=16579 ... O=59469978
