I burn between 4-2/3 and 5-2/3 tons per year. I run my boiler year round to also provide for the homes DHW. I heat a 1964 built house that is 1,680 sq-ft to 70 degrees, along with the addition of heating an 840 sq-ft "walk-out" finished (though not insulated) basement to 68 degrees, and an 840 sq-ft garage (which is heated only to 45 degrees, but which generally stays at about 50-55 degrees by robbing heat from the home that sits directly above it). There are generally only a handful of days each winter in which the T-Stat in the garage hits 45 degrees and my garage zone valve opens to heat it. So by the measure of some, I am fully heating 2,520 sq ft, and partially heating another 840 sq-ft.

I tend to burn a little more at this end of the season than I do in the fall, for a given day of the same temperature. I suspect that is due to the lower ground temperature, since March/April is the only time my basement gets on the cool side. We still need a little heat in May, but my heat pump can easily handle that.

Rob,
Yes. When it's below freezing it goes through two coal scuttles a day, that each hold about 32-35 lbs. of nut coal. Dropping back into the very cold temps of the last few days I've also had to add a 2 gallon bucket sometime during the day to help top off the #6 magazine. Those Lowes painter's buckets hold about 16-18 lbs. of nut. So that's at least 80 lbs. just for the #6,..... and at least 35 lbs. for the range.
Big old, drafty Victorian homes guzzle coal.

I just brought in 16 5 gallon pails a couple of days ago to top off my inside bin. It should get me into the first week of April but I'll probably burn into the 3rd week before switching over to wood for the shoulder temps. I lit the Harmon on Nov. 1 and it has been running steady since then (I guess that puts me into the official 1 match club. ). It looks like I'll end up burning ~3.5 tons for the season. Its kept the main part of the house between upper 60's to upper 70's w/o using my oil boiler.
Ya gotta like that!Homesteader wrote: ↑Tue. Mar. 20, 2018 9:06 amI just brought in 16 5 gallon pails a couple of days ago to top off my inside bin. I'm down to 16 bags and a few buckets of coal left. I started burning in early November in my stove. Because it got pretty cold around Veterans day I started using my boiler and let the stove go out. My shaking shoulder was bothering me so I stopped using the boiler in February and used the stove. This month I am back to using the boiler and should run out of coal in early April. 3.5 tons for the season. I will miss how quiet the coal boiler is compared to my oil boiler.
