Hopper Funnel

Guys

anyone ever build or buy a hopper funnel that would allow me to pour coal into a hitzer 503 hopper. Currently, small crumbs of coal fall onto the lip requiring me to clean up before I put the lid back on and at extreme temperatures I'd rather be over and done with faster. Also with a funnel I would be able to rest a 50 lb plastic bag briefly while pouring the coal in and eliminate a scuttle/bucket load up.

Attached are samples of what I have in mind - unfortunately these are for concrete mixers - I think aluminum would do but an off the shelf solution would be even better but I'll pay to have one made if I need to.

We use a boar hair paint brush and a coal hod.
Simple and easy.
Ok the whole system.
Plastic 40 lb bag emptied into a 5 gallon pail emptied into two coal hods.

VanBuren --- We go with the same, for bags just split a 40# bag into two coal scuttles and pour into the 503 ... for 5 gal
pails; same pour into the scuttles and wipe/clean with finger tip of a pair of gloves.

I noted the same problem. Luckily the 503 easily holds 40 lbs so I can fit the whole bag. I put the coal in a nice bucket that funnels it when I do to keep it off those ledges. It would have been nice if Hitzee would make those flanges at a 45deg angle and cast the lid accordingly to not have that problem. I keep a brush handy to wipe those stragglers off the edge when I take my chances with dumping the coal in straight from the bag.

If you are waiting till 40 lb fits the hopper must be empty.
The hopper should be kept reasonably full.

Hi Van

Im in the same mind as yourself and am looking for a hopper filler for my small French stove, did you have any joy sourcing anything?

Find an old stainless steel French Fry scoop and attach to an old hod ( older heavier gauge hods have longer spouts ) plastic ones are 15- still will last for 3-4 years

Thanks for that, might have to do something, as ive only seen one available to buy, and its not as good as it should be...

If you are not willing to use 2 coal scuttles and fill them half full
the other option is to invest in an 8" by 4" or 8" by 6" stove reducer.

The filler hole on the stove is only 5'' x 4'' and a funnel would enable filling without so much clean up from spills.

For the money spent on a 3" stainless steel food grade funnel($60+)from amazon you would
be better off having a heavy guage 3" funnel spout made by a sheet metal shop.

Even better would be to have the sheet metal shop make hinged lids for 2 new coal scuttles
leaving just enough of the scuttle lip open to dump the coal.
