Can a wood stove burn coal?

If it has shaker grates and air under the coal adjustments. But, normally a standard wood stove cannot easily.

Lump coal (soft coal) can be burned in a wood stove if you have a fireplace type cast iron grate for the coal to burn on. Hard coal would not burn well at all unless, as WNY said, you have air under the coal adjustments which most wood stoves don't have.

Not anthracite coal. A coal stove can burn wood, but not the reverse.
