I think it's obvious that, when everyone else here is successful at heating a home of your size with coal, & the fact that you have a perfectly good coal stove & that you are a wood burner.......... new to coal, the problem is not with the coal but something you are either doing wrong or not doing in terms of your technique. We are all trying to help you find out what the problem is, but the fact is that coal burns totally differently than wood & you need to learn how to burn it correctly. If you decide to turn back to wood, that's your choice, but we are all trying to help you over the big hurtle of switching from wood to coal. Accept the FACT that coal doesn't SUCK, it burns just fine but differently than wood & if you want to learn how to burn it correctly, we are here to help.....If however, you decide to quit, there are plenty of people here I'm sure, who would be willing to buy your coal stove, it's a good one. ;)

Devil : DEFENDER OF COAL

Here's some numbers off my Mark III:

Temp outside just went to 30*, so I turned the damper down to 1.75 turns out. Stack temp is 225* - 250*. Side of the stove in the center & 4" below top is 550*. Top center with blower on is 400*.

I don't think you can really consider me a "dyed in the wool wood burner". I've burnt a total of 3 cord of firewood in my house in my entire life! A draft reading of .o6" is what is recommended by Harman. The spinner is 3 turns out because it won't keep the house warm any lower than that. I will lower my baro setting to .04" and decrease my spinner setting to 1.5 turns out. I'll keep you posted. Thanks.

Do you have stove thermometers on the body of the stove and before the barometer?
Tempatures fro these would help.
Are you setting the baro with a manometer or just by the marks on the barometer?

I have a thermometer I stole of a BBQ grill sitting on top of the stove. It is not accurate AT ALL. I just use it to watch for a change. The only thermo on my pipe is the one after the baro. It is in the flue. My baro was set at .06" using a manometer, but all other changes are based on it's markings.

Get two stove thermometers that work, one for the body and one for the stove pipe below the barometer it will make your life easier.

A working, accurate thermometer will help you dial in the stove.

Too bad the shipping costs almost as much as the thermometer itself!

That Rutland one is the exact one I have -- I still paid over $15 for it at the store in town here. :o
