Hitzer 503 Insert Damper

Modern and vintage hand fired coal stove are similar to a wood stove and in some cases can burn either. They need to be regulated and fed by hand usually every 12 to 24 hours depending on your usage. They require no power to operate making them ideal for rural settings with long power outages.

While cleaning out my insert today a large recktangle piece if metal came off from back behind my hopper...From reading forums I assume it is my damper, How does this attatch?? It is going to get cold here again Tonight & I am not sure what to do as this is just my second year with the insert. I am not sure how long it was out of place for, I just don't want to do any damage to the Stove. Any feedback is appreciated.

Thanks,

John.

It is a recktangle 9 by 6 inches and is somewhat curved, It lookd a little warped. I will try to get some pictures up on here when the wife comes home.It was propped up against the top back right of my insert, I had to turn it to get it out...Do you know how the damper is attatched, if that is what this piece is...

The newer 503 stoves have a handle to open/close the internal damper. On the older [prior to this year] 503's there was an available fixed damper/insert that slid in place in the exit flue area and reduced the opening into the flue..
Just keep trying different postions with the plate,, it will fit in somehow. I have never seen a photo of the fixed reducer installed,, sorry.

Maybe someone with the older model 503 has some instructions and insight.

It looks as if it just sits up there like you said, I was poking around there with the shop vac & must have knocked it out of place. I appreciate your help.

That was it...it just sits up there on a ledge, I had to take off the hopper extension & then I was able to see.
Thanks for the help.
