Stove/Furnace Make: estate caboose stove

I'm an old my 1905 Estate caboose stove going, finally ! doing a fine job of heating my 2 car garage. That's my train room.
Question ? the fire bowl is cherry red even with all the air inlets closed down. Is this normal? If not normal, how can the thing be made to run slower, or cooler?

Do you have a hand damper installed? Just about required for any old stove.

I've seen it mentioned that those types of of old stoves burning cherry red is pretty common but see what others have to say.

I'm thinking that a hand damper would be in the chimney pipe? That makes sense. If the draft is slowed up the fire should run slower.........

I know nothing about hand fed stoves, but I'd guess it's getting too much air. It's leaking in someplace. Maybe some furnace cement or high temp silicone on the seams of the stove would help. Also, if there's no gaskes on the doors, that's a place to look. If you can't fit gaskets, cool the stove, clean one surface around the door. Tape sarhan wrap on the dirty surface, goop a bead of high temp silicone on the clean surface. Shut the door gently, let cure. Open door, peal sahran wrap. Instant gasket! (How the heck to you spell sarahannahan?)

Nunn of the old hand fed stove where ever air tight nor where they ment to be. The only time you should use a
hand damper is on them types of stoves. That is how you will control your draft you need to close it to damping the fire down they will still pull air threw the holes or slots. that are in them alot of People will use Pea size coal before they go to bed to slow the burn down and hold the fire over night. Nut in the day Pea at night or on a real cold day run some nut with some stove coal over it. You will get some high heat out of it Also most of the time your hand damper will be a 1/4 to 1/2 open when burning it. Then shut it for overnight Another trick Is spread some coal ash over the Top of Fire before bed it will also slow down the fire and will hold it until morning. Not a lot Just a small ash shovel full over the top. That is how you use to control the coal Fired kitchen stove & ovens aswell as Potbelly stoves heat troller bucket a day any of the non air tight stoves. With air tight stoves use a baro damper. Coal hand dampers will always have air slots or holes in
the plate. Some are solid dampers no holes they are for wood stoves incase of a chimney fire you close them to stop the air from feeding the fire. Also you would close the air knobs or slots on the stove to cut the air off

Not wanting to hijack your thread but do you have any pics of your train room? I set up a pretty big display for Christmas but never had the time or the room for a permanent setup.
