Jafadog, Your apsolutely right it's against the building codes and I think for the reason you mentioned creosote. However, I burned wood in this same configuration for a lot of years (back then it wasn't a code voilation) and never had a problem. I didn't have a problem with the wood I think for two reasons 1. my chimney goes up the middle of the house and always stayed warm and has a good draft and 2. I always let it burn hot for an hour or so every day. the chimney never built up any creosote. On this coal set-up I have now, I have an electrical interlock set up so only one stove can come on at a time.

Don't know if there is any chemical reason for not mixing the two fuels.

JB,

This my first year with a Hitzer 30-95. I replaced a Jotul#8 wood stove. I have 2060sqft center chimney colonial. I'm very happy with this setup.
I did the installation myself and had the building inspector sigh off on it. The coal stove is much less work with more even heat .. just what I was hoping for.

Cool. I thought I had heard something (or read something) about the exhaust from the two different fuel types creating a more corrosive residue in the flue, but I could very well be mistaken.

Again, excellent installation. You should hire out your skills!

Hello Devil505,

You were right the steel cloth clogged up the grate, fire went out. I'll say one thing i'm getting building new fires down pat.
