Pros and Cons of Adding a Log in My Hand Fired Coal Stove

Modern and vintage hand fired coal stove are similar to a wood stove and in some cases can burn either. They need to be regulated and fed by hand usually every 12 to 24 hours depending on your usage. They require no power to operate making them ideal for rural settings with long power outages.

I start my stove using matchlight charcoal and put tinfoil over the glass before lighting it. I just wrap two pieces of tinfoil over the door and close it to keep the foil in place. My glass stays clean as matchlight tends to leave a blue grey ash on everything.
If you can keep your head while those around you are losing theirs, you may have misjudged the situation.

Have you tried it without tinfoil on the window? My glass stays clean as a whistle w/o tinfoil.

I picked up some stove glass cleaner from Tractor Supply Company. It works wonders. Put a little on a rag and wipe the black crud right off the glass. Not sure if putting cold cleaner on hot glass would cause it to crack so try at your own risk while it's hot.
