Newbie With Question

Modern and vintage hand fired coal stove are similar to a wood stove and in some cases can burn either. They need to be regulated and fed by hand usually every 12 to 24 hours depending on your usage. They require no power to operate making them ideal for rural settings with long power outages.

Hello all - I'm new to the forum, and coal, so please bear with me. Could somebody tell me what this is and when I should use it? The furnace is a Viking Junior if that helps. I have plenty more questions but I'll start with this. Thanks in advance.

Do you mean the square flap with the chain? What does the chain connect to?

It could be a cleanout or draft regulator. More pics might help.
Nothing is impossible for people who don't have to do it themselves.

Thanks for the response. Yes, square flap with the chain attached. The chain runs to the front of the furnace and you need to manually pull the chain and hook it off to keep the flap open. I'll take a few more pics from different angle tomorrow.

I'd say it is a draft diverter or reducer.

It's a draft reducer. The newer Viking Junior's didn't have this. Just leave it closed and install a baro damper in the stove pipe.
