New to burning coal, I have a Tasso with wood grates and would like to burn coal. I have been trying to find the shaker grates with little luck. I can bounce the grates from under neath. I think I will give this a try with stove coal. I was thinking that a quick way to light the coal would be with a rose bud on my on my torch. Let me have it, I'm looking for advise. Thanks.

Start your coal fire with a wood fire, a well established wood fire, burnt down to hot coals then add a layer of coal,, let it catch, then add another layer of fresh coal.. then fill the firebox up as deep as you can get it.. coal likes a deep fire, thin spread out coal beds don't burn well at all. All combustion air must come from under the coal, unlike wood, coal will not burn with air from on top of the fire.
