Tell me if I got this right

New to me Gibraltar stove. Moved into the house a few months ago. Previous owner was using it when we looked at the house so it was in working order last winter. This site has been great and I was able to find the operators manual here. Anyone see any problems or potential problems from the pics? Anyone have info on the damper that sticks out just above the stove below the stove pipe? Anyone have the same stove that can offer any tips?

Barometric damper if you mean the last 2 pix. If prior owner was using it this way--leave it be. She looks good over-all.

I have a similar stove and can tell you they will give you many years of service. I would inspect the stove pipe for fly ash and rust holes by removing it. Also inspect the door gaskets, grates and fire bricks. Your main concern would be the grates because parts are expensive and hard to find. The shaker handles wear out but are easy to find or fabricate. That stove will heat a well insulated moderate size house on approximantly 4 tons of nut coal a season. Enjoy.

I would change the damper to the fields brand. It is just a better unit. Get a magnetic thermometer or 2 and a cheap ir thermometer. They are not necessary, but help make better decisions and for piece of mind. If this is a whole new ball game for you, get a manometer as well.

I agree, and will add, the magnetic thermometers placed on stove, and/or, pipe, plus an Infrared gun (they are not expensive now) will help you safely monitor the stove's operation. And they help with being consistent when resetting the dampers after shaking ash and refueling. Without them it'd be like driving a car without any gauges.

Thanks for the info guys. I had a coal stove may years ago but switched to wood. I do have magnetic thermometers and an IR thermometer. I plan on replacing the door gaskets and the door latch needs adjustments or replacing. It seems lose.
