A Friend of mine just purchased a used 50-93 for $300. He is going to use it at his deer camp. It has a brass door and blower. Some gaskets and the glass need to be replaced but everything else is in good order. My question is if the hopper was removed from the stove could it still be used like a batch fed stove. We spent a couple of hours going over everything gettting it ready to give it a nice coat of paint when the weather warms up?

Indeed it would. The hopper is removable to accommodate bit coal .. to be used in the manner you desire. If you want to operate it that way, its A-OK

How big is the camp? With the hopper out you could burn wood as well.

I think he would like to be able to burn wood anytime he needs to. Nice to have that option when a stove is your only source of heat.

Question: Is it an older 50-93 where the hopper is non removeable, or is it the newer 50-93 with the removable hopper bottom? Either way, when you remove the hopper, you loose your baffle. The hopper acts as a baffle. The stove will burn with, or without the hopper. Personally, if I were going to run the 30-95 or 50-93 without the hopper (baffle), I'd install a manual pipe damper to "MAYBE" help some with control and hold some heat in the stove, especially when burning wood. Otherwise, no need to install any kind of pipe damper in a Hitzer stove. For a camp, you'd probably ok without a baffle.

I'm not sure how old it is? He will have to use a 6" reducer into his current 8" chimney pipe. There is a hand damper in his chimney that he used for the wood stove.
