Does anyone know if it would be possible to mod the stove to burn smaller coal, say buck wheat or pea? Maybe it could be done by reducing the size of the hopper bottom outlet ? Ideas?

Pea won’t be an issue , buck will pack too tight (from a hopper , I believe). but everything makes heat if added right ( I’ve burned coal dust and dirt by making little isolated piles on an established coal bed,

Gee Thanks. I guess I'm one of those guys that don't read the manual. Actually didn't have one until your post. Thanks a bunch.

We have burned buck in our 50-93. Other than some pieces falling through the grates at startup it burned fine. Pea would be a better choice, but if you had some buck to burn up go ahead and try it.

Plus 1. Just put bigger stuff in first if you have it. Maybe only load finer stuff in one side if you need to keep temps up.

I just close my ashpan vents and tighten the knob on the slider handle to lower the heat output to about zilch.
I just run nut in my 503 ... if the output requires the windows to get opened I just open the windows. This happens about 1-4 days a year.
