Hand Fed Coal Stove: Vansco Industries/Treemont TAC 380

Post by tcaruso90 » Thu. Feb. 02, 2023 6:11 pm

I bought my first coal stove a 1986 Vansco Treemont TAC380 and installed my chimney last month. I’ve replaced the fire bricks and all the door gaskets. It had never been used as it still had the protective plastic film on the riveted metal tag inside the main door and had to go through the initial burn off of all the chemicals/fumes. I’ve been using it and learning through trial and error, but definitely love burning coal. There is almost no info at all online in reference to these stoves. Any available info or advice for the stove and burning coal would greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Are you able to keep coal fire going? Are you burning anthracite?

Yeah doing pretty good at keeping it going have had it stall a couple times, but not go totally out. Was able to open ash door and get it going again. And yes I’m burning anthracite.

Have not installed a Baro, which I’m assuming you mean barometric flue dampener, just read about them on here while looking for possible info about my stove.

Will have to upload grate photo later have a fire going currently. But it’s mounted to the stove on either end with a slot to insert handle on the ash door side to shake. The front and back grate teeth are stationary just the middle piece moves. The middle grate is rocked backwards in the photo.

Looks like you got you the hang of burning coal fairly quickly, nice flame not roaring and blasting btus into space ( baro is primarily a safety device to prevent runaway over drafting , also increases efficiency so maximum btus transfer to stove before exiting) great job 👏

Thanks, I’ll have to look further into them.

Can you post pic of burning fire? Reason I ask is that with grate under only part of the firebox, it should only burn near/above the grate. Curious to see what it looks like.
