Just got back from a 4 hour road trip to get a load of coal from a add on Facebook. The woman said she was sure it was antrasite.it looked good so I hit a large piece wit a hammer and it broke like flint. When I put a few chunks in my stove it smoked and produced yellow flames . Could this be a low grade antrasite or did I get screwed? Just called her and she said when they bought it the man said it was antrasite they used it in a wood stove until there boiler was installed any thoughts? It's stove coal , thanks for any opinions.

If it’s dusty and dull it might be bituminous poke it after hour and see what happens ( yellow sooty flames are the giveaway use plenty of secondary air or crack the door

Per year? Sorry, your wording has got me confused. Free coal is "grate"! Hahaha. That's how I got started with coal. I was given 4 80# tubs. Didn't even have a.stove. I don't disparage the basement mining process, but you typically get what you pay for. If OP drove for 4 hours and paid for however much he got, it better have been cheap. The time and effort could have been better spent if it turns out to be bit.

Same here I bought my stove off eBay as a wood burner ( I was heart broken at first thinking I screwed up but for the 150- I was willing to drive up to Massachusetts to get it , best mistake I ever made ) , I was saying that even when I have most of my fuel split or piles for the year i usually spend 200- at TSC for
Compressed bricks to help the lesser seasoned stuff get going

I'd say that's worth it. They tell you what brand? Or mine?
