So far, the worst I've found in free coal is a mummified mouse. When they get that dry, they burn very quickly. :D

The pic shows last 2 1/2 weeks of the bottom of the first barrel , I’ll recheck in another 2 weeks if we get a warm up again ( I’m way ahead this year with mild temps / splitting a cord just in case and hoarding a 1/2 a cord of mixed cabinet and molding mill drops, I sifted these 2 barrels so this has no dirt or fines over 1/4” next years fuel I guess

Yup, gotta weight the aggravation against free BTUs. Sometimes free is rather costly. :D

I didn’t even know this stuff was on top of the grate ( thankfully the bolt wasn’t small enough to to wedge and crack a finger , although I have been thinking of buying an extra set with the grate support ( pricy but mines a little twisted after 30+ years

I got a couple of firecrackers mixed in with the coal out of a bin from an old farmhouse once. I was loading the stove and had my head near the open door when the first one went off. Scared the crap out of me and made my ears ring for quite a while afterwards. Later another went off in the stove after I had closed it up.
You can be sure I inspected the contents of each bucket I brought in very closely after that...
