I'm going to assume that Vermont Castings coal stoves are as good as their woodstoves? I had a Vigilant in the past and it was a great wood burner. Hope it works out well for you!

This stove is a wood/coal combo...I have burned both,and either burns very well....except with coal I don't have to get up twice a night and load it...we no longer use the castings..we have a legacy mark 2&3's now,and they pump the heat!

Coal stoves and older VC wood stoves have a good reputation. Newer VC wood stoves (last 10-15 yrs) have a horrible reputation for problems and for poor customer service, unlike in days gone by.

That's what I found back in 2005 when I went looking for a wood stove. Always loved the look of the Vermont Castings stoves. Employee of mine had an older one he'd been using for many years that was very good. But the complaints of poor castings and poor support sent me looking elsewhere.

Based on good reviews, and not able to find any complaints back then, I went with a Napolean wood stove. Very efficient and met the EPA standards without need of a catalytic converter. My daughter has been using it for many years and not one problem.

Picture of my Vigilant II and my dogs. I burn anthracite nut in it or when it is not as cold wood. I also have a Resolute that I installed in 1989. Porcelain is a little chipped but it still burns great.
