5 gallons is typically between 36 to 40 pounds, depending on the size and quality of the coal.

I emptied a 40 on bag of nut into two 4.5 gallon pails. 34 lbs on the left, 6 lbs on the right.
32-34 lbs for a 4 gallon pail is a rough estimate.

Now you have to figure out if the pails are 4 or 5 gallon, LOL
I really like the shorter 4 gallon pails. It just seems less clumsy pouring it into my stove. If Im scooping I like a coal pail better.

Alright, thanks folks.
I shoveled/loaded 5 freaking tons of coal yesterday, now I know why I am sore.

And if anyone cares my new 20'x30' pad with 3 sided 4' walls will hold 47 tons of nut coal. Must be stacked fairly high in center to avoid spill out.

Every childhood project for me involved a 5 gallon bucket. Wheelbarrow was a luxury and my old man certainly didn't believe in power tools, he was the real defintion of green!
I haul all my coal into my basement in 5 gallon buckets!

I get that, BUT ... I burn an average of 8 tons a season and am getting too old and fat.Retro_Origin wrote: ↑Sun. Sep. 25, 2022 9:32 pmEvery childhood project for me involved a 5 gallon bucket. Thats a lot of pails of coal! (and a lot of calories "burned" pun intended).
