My local Ace Hardware store is selling a ton of bagged coal for $535. He usually orders three trucks but is only ordering one truck this year. He told me they would not even give him a delivery date. A smaller guy that sells just coal is $465 a ton of bagged nut coal. Last month he wanted $425.
I was all excited to get the stove fired up this season, now I am thinking I might be better off just using my propane. Crazy times.

I have a 1000 gallon tank that I topped off this summer. $2.45 a gallon, cost me $668. I have a new house and can actually heat it for 2 years on the 800 gallons the tank holds. My coal stove is in my basement and it does a beautiful job keeping the basement warm. I installed the coal stove for emergency heat, but found I really like using it.

Even at $465 per ton coal is a better deal, but not by nearly as wide of a margin as it has been in the past. It's up to you to decide if the extra work is worth it.fpappal wrote: ↑Wed. A good compromise may be to just heat the basement with coal and let propane do the rest.

Shop around, our local bag supplier up here in the North is 365/ton.
