One Shaker stuck on 503C
I turned it too far and some big junks got into the opening. I pushed as much coal as I could to the other side of the stove. I am going to let it burn down and hopefully shake it after there is little or nothing left on the side that is stuck.

It happened to me also. I had a stone block my one grate, and of course we all know that stones don't burn. Lost the whole load for a nut sized stone jamming the grate. I tried the old let her burn trick, but still couldn't get the grate free, so down it went. it happens. Don't feel that your left out we all get these from time to time.
Woops!!!!!!!

I was lucky because temperatures were going to approach 60 so the night before I didn't add any more coal. I wasted very little coal.Hounds51 wrote: ↑Fri. Feb. 18, 2022 9:41 amIt happened to me also. No wasting of coal, mister. Toss that stuff back in and fire it up. You know it came out of the ground, right? Been covered in dirt and grime anyway. Use it up.

My brother is going to look at a used 503 today. Did you have any problems with yours?
What should he look for if there is?
I heard they have hopper burnout problems. Did you have any problems with your hopper?

H, the only hopper problem would primarily come from burnin wood HOT & I mean HOT--even if the bottom edges are bad (a couple, three inches up from the bottom) HITZER has a boot ya can put on--mine was like that & the boot solved the problem--been goin strong for 10+ yrs. Makle sure grates work smooth & grate frame is solid. Hell, you know what to look for, you're no idiot!! Where would ya put it??? In the MIDDLE of the house??? double

No Fred, this is for my brother. I don't have a fire place, and if I did, I would probably put in a free standing stove. I was just looking out for him. Anyways we made the trip and saw it. It is great shape and was taken care of, plus the guy knocked off $100.00, so my brother got it for less than a grand. I know it's an older 503, as it doesn't have the built in damper, but it appears that it was well taken care of and definitely not over-fired. The hopper is in great shape, and the grates are premo. So I think he got a great stove for the money.freetown fred wrote: ↑Sun.
