H, you're right--BUT--yep, the proverbial but!! LOL Each stove & each chimney have their separate idiosyncrasies--when push come to shove--it's experimentation that finds that happy setting. A. has been given some good info. here.

Ok, thanks to everyone here, the problem seems to have went away. I now run it with the secondaries cracked ever so slightly.
Here's my new tending procedure.

1st: I slowly open the hopper lid to let any trapped gases out then close it. So far no fireballs.

2nd: open the glass door and poke the corners. No slicing.

3rd: shake the grates from below.

4th: shake the coal down from the back of the stove.

5th: slowly open the hopper lid and fill hopper.

6th: empty ashes.

I will note any changes here. Thanks to all your contributions here I may keep my eyebrows intact. If the problem arises again I will post back. Thanks again.
