I tried to be creative and take one out of the Warm Morning playbook and make flues in the corners of my stove that go straight to grate level with direct air access to below the grates. I used 6” long 1/2” schedule 80 pipe nipples furnace cemented into the corners. No avail though. I thought maybe I would see little torches in the corners. Negative Ghost Rider.

Let me see if I can find the repair notes and pictures that I took from my brothers (Arlon) stove. There are pictures about half way in the following thread Note you can see the vents in the lower part of the firebox door.waytomany?s wrote: ↑Fri. Any idea what the age of your Harman is, Hounds? You ever called Harman or Legacy with the serial number?

Can you provide a link? I can't verify this information.Arlon wrote: ↑Tue. Jan. 11, 2022 7:47 am"The gasket is only supposed to cover the sides. The horizontal sides are left open for overfire air and as an airwash to keep the glass clean."
Waytomany, That's the NEWER Mark III's. Mine has an air vent directly below the glass that is cast into the door. Common mistake but something that needs to be checked. My old one, according to Harmon, has the gasket around the entire glass.

Sorry, I didn't get back to you sooner. The Mark III is my brothers and we could not find the serial # on it.
I think I read somewhere that a lot of the coal stoves had sticker serial # tags on them and that over a period of time they let loose. Also the former owner told us that he repainted the stove and replaced a bad grate. So we are not so sure about the exact age of the stove. We were also told that the stove had at least 1 if not 2 previously owners before the seller got it. So who knows. All that we knew was that the stove seemed sound as far the structure went, that's until we discovered the faulty patch work on the door glass studs. When we had the door off for repairs, I noticed the louvers at the bottom of the door. At first I thought they were just part of the cast, to make it look pretty. But upon farther inspection, I held a flashlight up to them and found that the light was shining thru to the other side of the door. This must have been an early design, or that all Mark III doors have this. Either way we decided to fully gasket the glass and his stove burns both wood and coal flawlessly. Don't know what more I can say about his stove. All I am saying is to check the bottom of the load door, if you have these louvers, you might want to consider to fully gasket the glass, as to keep your secondary air more in check.

Seen two for sale online yesterday that were made the exact same way.

Check to see if you can see light on the other side of these louvers. If so why would you want more secondary air. Unless the glass air wash really does work. As I said before, we did a full gasket on the glass, and it appears that his glass is still being air washed. Although his glass is far from new, as it has been glazed from the previous owners, it still appears to be clean except for occasional fly ash.
And now he has complete control of his stove.

My Mark 3 has these cutouts on the inside of the door as well. There is only gasketing on the glass on the vertical sides. The glass is floating in place and can actually be wiggled around a bit. This is all to Harman specifications. My stove was purchased brand new in 2001.

If you are happy with it and all is well, then don't mess with it.BlackBetty06 wrote: ↑Fri. Jan. 21, 2022 11:33 amMy Mark 3 has these cutouts on the inside of the door as well. My MII has the same cutouts in the door also. When I replaced the glass a couple of years ago I did the flat gasket on the sides only per Lagacy's instructions. I found that too much secondary air was getting into the firebox making the stove run cooler for the setting. I then added the flat gasket around the top and the stove heats up like it should giving me the wash I nead just from the bottom.
