Does any have a problem shaking down chubby?
For some reason my shaker gets stuck, It won't go in or out. Sometimes I am able to unstuck it. But since I don't know why it gets stuck I am not always successful. Then my fire gets ash bound and goes out. Help! I spoke with Larry last year and he sent me a new shaker but I still have a problem.

I owned a Chubby for years. It could be pieces of coal getting caught between the grate sides and pot. A pot ring will help with this if you do not have one. It can also be a cracked grate. Once the grate cracks and swells it won’t budge until it cools down a bit. I’ve had both issues happen a few times.

I have a ring. I haven't looked for cracks this year. But I will.

If everything checks out with the stove perhaps your coal has some rocks in it.

Or maybe slag. Is your ash more white, or more pink? Both will create slag, but usually pink ash will conglomerate more, causing larger slag. The reason is pink ash contains more Iron, thats why it's pink.

The ash is mostly gray and it is TSC coal. It probably has rocks in it.

Fwiw when I burn stove coal the big pieces don't fall apart after they have burned. Once these pieces work down to grate level, they just hang out there and cause problems. They jam in corners of fire box, etc. Maybe the large pieces you are getting are doing the same for you.

Had the same happen with a ton of stove coal I tried. Even the triangular grates could not grind up some of the larger pieces of hard ash. Then they would accumulate on the grate and not only make it tougher to clear ash, they reduce the amount of coal that could burn. After a few days, heat output would start to drop off until I could dig them out, clear ash, and get more fuel in.

One of the reasons why I'm not buying stove coal anymore.

I’ve had my own issues with clinkers in the past, but this is where slide grates like on suspended pot stoves shine.

Have you put a very large washer under the grate yet? Mine will work without it but I like it better with a washer so left it on. It gives it a slight pivot if needed. note: this may not cure your issues, its just a thought.

Hello, I fired up my chubby 3 days ago, My first chubby.
I put a new grate in before fireing up.
Shakes very easy.
Did you look for any clinkers from the ash door?
Might be able to see where it is hanging up with alot of light
How old is grate?
Do you have Large Chubby Stove Center Pin Fire Pot?

I do have the center pin. I cleaned our the stove and forgot to put the ri g back in. It seemed to shake better but I still had problems so I let the fire go out. I experienced on what could could the problem and it seems like it is the actual shaker. It is getting stuck with no coal in the box. If I remove the shaker, I can shake from underneath the grate. When I put it back on it gets stuck. Not sure how to solve this problem.

Chubby grates are designed upside down.
That's the problem.

The stiffeners should face down towards ash pan. The slots in the grate should wider in the bottom of slot, narrow side up.

Someone saw an antique grate, and had an idea. Just didn't know which side went up.

Stones, clinkers get stuck in the slot, and don't fall down thru and jam thing up.

Grate is very similar to what's in a Baltimore/Latrobe stove from 1875-1890's with an added draw center.

Chubby would be a rock star stove, if the grates were designed correctly. So says the major Stoveologists (no such word) at the stove
conventions.
