Not sure I agree mntbugy, I bought a used Chubby and put in $300 parts including piping and manometer.
Very simple to operate, 1 match so far.
The grate design (Top Lip) helps push coal around letting the ash fall thru and if on the bottom this would hinder slicing.
@Vonda, upload a photo of the front where the shaker handle is.

I normally push any clinker up and then it burnsmntbugy wrote: ↑Sun. Dec. 26, 2021 2:52 pmChubby grates are designed upside down.
That's the problem.
The stiffeners should face down towards ash pan. The slots in the grate should wider in the bottom of slot, narrow side up.
Someone saw an antique grate, and had an idea. Just didn't know which side went up.
Stones, clinkers get stuck in the slot, and don't fall down thru and jam thing up.
Grate is very similar to what's in a Baltimore/Latrobe stove from 1875-1890's with an added draw center.
Chubby would be a rock star stove, if the grates were designed correctly. So says the major Stoveologists (no such word) at the stove
conventions.
now that the temp is cooler - descent ash,

I strongly disagree. I can buy mica baseburrners for less than 300, that needs nothing. Will blow the doors off a Chubby.
Member Asea asked a Chubby question the other day. Over at the other place. He almost got the education from stove experts more knowledgeable than me. On the Chubby grate issues. They whizzed in his corn flakes and coffee.

Must mean facebook somewhere, where any discussion on any collectible item or any type of repair on anything becomes a pissing contest... But some of the sport type groups are friendly. Its amazing how upset people get about nothing there.
Any luck yet Vonda?

I'ma simple kind of man.
I can chew gum and walk at the same time.
I'm still working on shaking the coal stove and drinking coffee at the same time. (without spilling coffee on my shirt).
I think thats why I like the chubby, of course there was a for sale offer out there I couldn't refuse.
I notice Vonda checks in sooner or later.

"There's no place, like this place, near this place, so this must be the place" .Quote from a gas station with antique gas pumps.
The gas pumps cost more than the property.

My Jr may be a different size than yours, but I'll try to post a pic with measurements tomorrow. If I forget then remind me. All it does is raise the grate up a small amount. That can help stop stuck grates. It gives the grate a small amount of tilting too which should be helpful.
