Good Morning All,
Fired up our Chubby stove this week for the first time this year. I have not been able to keep this thing idling down near the 300* temp. It runs up near 500 to 550 or even 600.
I have the air intake door at the bottom of the stove closed all the way.
The ash door and the fire view door have new rope gasket on them.
The only thing that I can see might be a cause to it that the coal - Kimmels bagged nut, has huge pieces this year. Could this be causing to much air to run up through the coal bed?
Looking for advise on what to try.

If you have the air intake closed all the way it shouldn’t matter what the size of coal is. You should be able to choke it out. Do a smoke test to see where your air is entering the stove. Being gaskets recently replaced, perhaps this is your culprit.

I’m with anthony, you need to do a smoke test. Check around both doors, air intake slider and shaker handle. I know the shaker handle inlet gets worn out on these stoves.
A manual damper in your flue would help tame the draft if you don’t already have one. Also, a manometer would greatly help determine what is going on with your draft. Opening the secondary air dog ears may help slow the burn.

eerily similar to another recent post.
you mentioned gaskets.
1. Size correct (Did you purchase from Larry? -, cleaned (any old residue?)
2. Dollar bill or Smoke test gasket seal?
Anything else "new" or "different" in setup?

I have not run my coal stove for some time and replacing parts has we speak.
I did weld a washer to the shaker as it was worn.
Not sure how much air enters from that point.

I have a manual pipe damper & a barometric damper above that just as the install instructions suggest.
I used lighter and went around both the doors, but have not seen anything that would suggest the new gasket would be the issue.
Could I be shaking too much or flossing the coal too much?
The previous door gaskets were extremely worn, thus the needed replacement. I used the gray high temp 1/2 stove gasket rope.
I did fire the stove the same day that I did the gasket replacement.

I did not do as nice of a job as Steve above did on the shaker hole, but did slip a washer over the rod and push that against the hole after I am done shaking.
If that hole is ok, and your gasket is ok, try aluminum tape over one of the slots in the bottom door and see if that helps. Tin foil might work in a pinch but not as good. Maybe fiberglass insulation too. The bottom door was not made to be airtight and that will seal up part of it.

Did you check thermometer?
Does fire look different?
In the future I would stick with what larry sells
Not hi-jacking a thread here but I'm still running my oil burner on empty for weeks.
When tank is empty will stick to coal.
Bought 2 ton.
Keep us posted mof1964

I'm not speculating on problem but Larry's gasket material is different then most sold.

What could be the difference in the stove rope gasket? I bought the good braided high temp gray stuff vs the white rope.
What should I see on the dollar bill test?

Put a dollar bill between the door and stove and close the door. If bill pulls out easily its the gasket. Do that all the way around the bottom door. Top door is not the problem. Just check the bottom door for now.

Put a dollar bill in the door and close it. It should be snug when tugged on. Do this all the way around both doors. Use a dollar bill, I wouldn’t want a $50 burning up on you. Hahaha
If it’s running hot it’s most likely the lower door.

I'm going to try to answer but first please answer this.
Does the dollar pull out with the door closed and how much tension before that happens?
