- Hand Fed Coal Stove: Hitzer 503 insert
- Coal Size/Type: Blashak nut coal
Hi all! So last winter I ran through a TON of coal, so after cleaning it out this Spring, the chimney cleaner told me that the baffle plate must have BURNT UP! Argh! My stove is old - about 18 years, so Hitzer sent me another baffle plate, but since the old one wasn't even there, I don't know, and can't seem to find a YouTube video on it, how to place the baffle plate correctly? It's a flat piece of metal, 6" x 9", no bend or curve. Here's a picture of the upper back of the stove; and a picture of the plate itself. Can anyone talk me through this? Happy to do it on the phone while I try!

260-589-8536 ... ask for Dean at Hitzer. I’m sure he’d be happy to walk you through it, plus he can help you identify any other problems that you might have or find during the install process.

Thanks Bill... I kind of didn't want to bother Dean because I'm sure he has thousands of people calling him personally with questions lol. I thought one of them many experts in this forum could maybe help. But I just posted my question this morning so I'll give it a couple of days before I bother Dean...

I’m sure he gets lots of calls, but not thousands and likely not even hundreds. I’ve been there several times and never heard the phone ring.
I actually spoke to Dean myself this morning and he’s the one that answered the phone. I called to check coal availability and I’m glad I did rather than just chancing the drive because they are out of coal until next week...save one skid with my name on it for weekend pickup. Thanks to Dean for holding it for me.
I’m sure Dean or Mark would be glad to help you. If someone doesn’t answer right away then you are prompted to choose a number for Mark or Dean to answer.
I’m sure someone here can answer your question as well. Might take a tad bit longer, but I’m sure someone will be along shortly to help you.

PAC I looked back in the archives here Capecoaler posted curved side towards hoper. Hope that helps. Wish he would show up from summer vacation he’s a 503 expert.

Reread your post no curve, I read somewhere the old 503s had a puck for a baffle. Probably why you didn’t find one. Most likely burned up. Hopefully you got the right one.

Getting the serial number off of the tag on the back/side of the stove and having it handy and ready when you call Hitzer might go a long way into making sure you got the right part AND get correct install directions. That number will help them identify the age of the stove (insert in this case) if need be for the correct info.

I don’t think Capecoaler will be on this week. The nor-eastern knocked out a lot of power on the cape
I have a Hitzer 503, and my baffle plate needed replacement a few years back.
As you said, it’s just a rectangular plate, nothing fancy. On the back side of the hopper, there’s a small piece of 90 degree angle welded on near the bottom. One side of the baffle plate rests on this angle, and the other side leans against the back of the stove. The side that rests on the angle welded on the back of the hopper is lower than the side that leans against the back of the stove.
I hope that helps.
