Post by Vonda » Tue. Jul. 27, 2021 2:04 am

Hello,
I am moving to smaller home, about 500 Sq ft.
I am thinking my chubby will be too much for a small space that is well insulated.
Any idea for a small stove? I want one that allows me to see the flames
Thanks geniuses

That's like finding a needle in a haystack. But I did think about it.

No real fire view with a Jr though, just a small window so you can peak in at the fire. There was a fire view window in progress at one time but I dont think its gotten thru all the patents, etc. I much prefer 8 to 10 hr tending with mine over 12 hrs. Ive ran it over a month straight in off seasons with no issues that way. If I was doing 12's I may have had to relight it once or twice. Some people do it though.

Ive rarely recommended antiques (nothing against them) but if you want a small stove with a window view there are some old small diameter stoves with decent windows. Those tall steel round ones is what Im thinking of. They came in all sizes.

There werent many small coal stoves made in recent times. Jotul 507's, Crane Coal Cookers, Jr's. Harman Mark I might be too big but has a big window.

I think this is what he is referring to: http://www.marinestove.com/orderinfo.htm

They make stoves for yachts.

There are out there. I bought a very nice JR last winter and ran it in my basement while I was redoing the main heating system. I found the stove to be undersized for what I was doing, but it would probably be about right for 500 sq. in a warm climate. No window for the flames though.

Honestly if I was going to live in a house that small, I would question giving up any floor space for a stove. If the house is well insulated the heating costs should be very low.

I'm going to throw Hitzer 30-95 at ya. You can simmer it way way down, and have a fire view.

I think one of the small French Godin stoves ( Petit Godin ? ) might work in terms of size, but I don't know anything about how long those can be ran between tending. The one I am thinking of has a decent sized window for the size of the stove, such as on thread "can i vent a godin 3730 with pellet stove 4 inch pipe?" at least I think that is a window

I have often wondered about the antique cylinder stoves. Many have large windows in the doors, but it always seemed like the doors are much higher than the firepot. I have not read anyone's comments about using one.

For 500 sq ft most stoves might be kinda large. My house is 1150 sq it heats it to 80 quite nicely. If I were to block off the back half it would be about 500 square. With that I’m sure I could keep it low enough and lite to heat the intended area quite efficiently. Yes. I heat to 80 In My main room. After working all day and being cold you have to be able to get the chill off. Yes. I hate the cold
