The place I usually get my coal in bags shut down now I’m forced to get one ton bags or bulk. What is the best way to manage and deal with the bulk? Any tips?

Bulk can be easier than bags, depending on where you put it.

Back when coal was king, many homes had a coal bin in the basement. That's what I use and bring coal up to my stoves in buckets. My local bulk coal dealers use a chute, or a conveyor belt off the back of their coal truck to load the coal down into the bin through a basement window.

You can build a bin outdoors.

You can put a tarp down outdoors and pile the coal on it. Then cover it with another tarp to keep enough rain and snow off it so that it won't freeze into a solid pile in winter.

It's a good idea to first ask you bulk dealer what works best with their delivery equipment.

I have a basement bin that holds 10 ton - enough to get me though a long cold winter. I've used bags, too, but prefer bulk and not having to wrestle with 40 pound bags and having to go outside in winter to bring in bags.

I get a backhoe bucket full about 1300# and back into my bin , holds about a ton and shovel it out with a snow shovel. Also have a couple of super sacks. Takes about 15 minutes. My supplier is only about 14 miles away. And there’s a place with neon in the windows on the way!

I prefer bulk, and it's less money. Sometimes the bags are handier in some situations, but then you have to monkey with the empty bags. Those mini barns work pretty good too.

We get it loaded into our trailer and leave it in there as we use it up. When we're close to empty, we shovel into 5-gallon buckets and go get some more.

I built a shed specifically to store my coal. It holds @ 7 ton which last me @ 2 1/2 years. I have 2 Lowe’s mini trash cans which hold about 2bs of coal each. Usually a bucket every day except when it’s around 0 then 2 buckets for the day. I plan on building another coal shed. One for rice coal for my garage. I can lower the rice stove enough to keep the shop from freezing and I can crank it up a few hours before I plan on being out there. Anywhere from 1/4 5 gal pail a day to a full bucket. 1 1/2 tons a season in there.

I initially started with bags and would generally need about 1.5 tons of coal each season. Got tired of loading it twice (at the store and then at the garage), the pouring into the hod causing a great deal of dust and the collection of bags until going to the dump. Decided to use adapt a couple of bulk storage bins for coal and really happy with it.

2. much, much less labor
3. less time to restock as it is delivered to our home
4. less packaging mess
5. easier to load the hod
6. much less dust

Soccer contact who sells Sheds the wooden sheds .I was at a shed dealer with a friend .Anyway a shed fell off the truck and was damaged .The shell dealer said make me an offer .One side was busted .There was a days work to fix the shed and some 15 two by 4s and fourteen foot lumber plates needed .Also alum siding needed .Buddy passed but its an option to check .jack
