I have a chance to pick one of these up for a low price. What I understand wood will burn in a coal stove just not very efficiently, and some will do it better than others. Does anyone have experience or theory on how this model would do burning wood based on its design?

Second question is this stove a good fit for my application: ~800 sqft outbuilding with a slab floor, used for home school and sometimes overnight guests = typically would only be heating during the day. Thanks

 If the price is right and every thing is in working order it will be fine. All comes down to time and patience.

You would be burning wood over coal grates so not ideal, and then wood needs most of it's air from 'over the fire' not so much from below the grates...but if handled with correct attention the wood gets burned and still makes heat.

That is one heavy stove!!!
